Internships
If you have successfully completed an internship you will be more
attractive to an employer. Why? You used your education to apply
what you learned. You may have been responsible for deadlines,
projects, researching information, working as part of a team,
learning how to use technology or setting goals. All these real work
life experiences assist you in building your skills.
Employers that hire interns are interested in students who have strong
GPAs, participate in school and extracurricular activities and
volunteer in their community. If you do not have an idea about what
area of accounting you want to specialize in, an internship can help
you narrow your focus.
Locating an Internship Program
Internships are more common for college students than high school
students. That is not to say internships aren’t available for high
school juniors or seniors. As a Student Member of the Illinois CPA
Society, you will be sent email alerts of new internships and job
postings that are targeted towards students and new graduates.
Also, check with your school career center, student clubs, faculty
members and guidance counselors for leads. If there is a specific
organization you would like to work for go to their web site for
more information.
